Finding out about Baby #2...
Well it's July 5th and we're only at Week 8. 32 lonnnng weeks ahead of us :) I'm remembering how much patience it takes to be pregnant. Sheesh!
When I found out I was pregnant with Malachi, I thought I was taking the test more to confirm that I wasn't pregnant than to see if I was. We weren't necessarily trying to get pregnant yet. But I felt funny and thought I looked bigger so we bought a test lol. I thought to myself, let's just rule out pregnancy and figure out why I feel so funny...not! Turns out, at that point I was only 3 weeks pregnant, so it came as such a shock. I just walked out of the bathroom in disbelief. Since then, I've often felt bad that I couldn't make it more exciting for Ryan. To be fair, I think he was just as freaked out as I was, so I guess it WAS kind of a surprise :p
This time around, we were trying... for quite a while, actually. I was given a gift card to one of those "paint your own ceramics" places about a year and a half ago. Maybe 2 years. Even though we weren't trying at that point, I saved that gift card so that I could use it to make a bowl, or plate or cup or something that would let Ryan know I was pregnant with baby #2. You know the saying...something about when you make plans, God laughs? Yea...that happened with this lol. But in such a good way! Here's our story for Baby #2.
Ryan, Malachi and I went to Disneyland with some of Ryan's family in mid-June. We all stayed in the same house together, within walking distance to the park. On our second day there (Saturday), I knew I was due to start soon so I went to the closest store to get some supplies. While I was there, I thought, "Eh, why not get a test too?" Just so I know if I'm gonna need the supplies or not lol. When I got back to the house, it was time to leave, and I had already used the restroom that morning. So I hid the test in my purse--thank goodness for purses with lots of pockets--and off we went to the Happiest Place on Earth.
Within a couple of hours we took a potty break. With a toddler in tow, we made sure to take plenty of those. Luckily, Malachi agreed to go in the men's room with Ryan so I was free to pee! So there I was, in the Disneyland restroom. Surrounded by the sounds of crying children, flushing toilets, running water... And I couldn't get the stinkin' thing open lol. Nervous shaky hands I suppose. I was trying to go quickly since it takes a while for the test to give a result, and I had several people waiting for me outside. Luckily, I didn't have an accident lol. I packed extra undies for Malachi, just in case he couldn't hold it, but none for myself. :p Anyway, I finally got it open and proceeded to take the test. When I saw those two lines, I think I stopped breathing for a second. The biggest smile came across my face and then....no one to tell! I laughed to myself because the first thing I wanted to do was call my mom. But I knew I needed to tell Ryan first.
I walked out of the bathroom to the whole family and didn't know how to act. But I had already asked Ryan earlier that morning if we could have some time for just the three of us, and he said yes. So I knew I'd get a chance soon.
Once I saw Ryan, I asked for his phone. I had already come up with a plan to tell him. Our friend Robby works at Disneyland and I knew we'd see him once his shift was over. I got his number from Ryan's phone and asked him to get Malachi some Mickey ears that say "Big Brother." I was happy with myself because 1) What an awesome way to incorporate Mickey, Malachi and Disneyland in the surprise for him! And 2) I could tell someone my secret!! Thank goodness.
We went on with our day. Robby met up with us a few hours later and he very sneakily passed the ears to me. I was even able to get money from Ryan's wallet. I found out later that he did notice some money missing, but he thought he just spent it already and had forgotten lol.
I had two ideas for when we were on our own. The first was to just put the ears on Malachi and see how long it took Ryan to notice. The second was to ask someone to "take our picture", but to actually have them record us instead. We always have to tell Malachi to say cheese, or tickle him, or SOMETHING to get him to smile for pictures. So I was going to do to Ryan what we did to my parents when we told them about Malachi....which is to say "1, 2, 3 say I'm pregnant!!!" while the camera is recording instead of taking a picture.
I tried to get away from the group for even just a few minutes, but every time I tried...no such luck lol. I realized I needed to be careful about which rides I went on, so when everyone decided to go on the shaky ride, I explained to Ry that just in case I'm pregnant, I shouldn't go. LOL I thought for sure he'd think that was weird, but I guess he's used to my level of crazy :p I hoped he'd take that as an opportunity to hang out with me and the boy for a bit so I could finally tell him. But everyone followed him when he came to hang out with us lol.
Ryan didn't know why I wanted to get away, obviously. But my emotions (and impatience and frustration) definitely got the best of me that night. Big fight right before bed because he didn't make it a point to back me up and let us have some time alone...I actually almost slipped during my word vomit. I said, "Have you considered that there might be a REASON I wanted to get away from everyone for a little while?!" Oops! lol...good thing he didn't think about that comment too much!! :p He might have guessed, and that would have been an awful way for him to find out.
I don't mention that fight just to air our dirty laundry. If that's what I wanted to do, I'd go much deeper. It was a big fight lol. It's all just to say that I LOVE US...fights never last long, even when feelings are hurt. Sure I was frustrated that I wasn't being heard all day. But we each said our piece, came to an understanding, and moved on before we fell asleep. We didn't rest our heads until the anger was gone. I love that about him, and about us. And now, I can laugh about it! As long as I get some alone time with him the next time we're on vacation ;)
So we woke up Sunday, got packed and got on the road. Driving...eh, not the ideal place to tell him the good news. We got home around dinner time/Warrior game time. Definitely NOT the right time lol. I waited til the game was over, we ate dinner, we caught up on one of our shows, and by then it was his bedtime. Luckily, he wanted a shower first so I had a chance to plan with Malachi.
I showed Malachi the hat and we put it on his bed. I told him that it was a surprise for daddy, so when I say "Go get your hat" he needed to get the hat that was on his bed. He said ok, but I was nervous that it wouldn't work as well as one of my original plans. Ryan got out of the shower while Malachi and I were reading a bedtime story. I asked Ryan to come read with us. He wanted to check all the mail from the weekend first, so Malachi and I continued reading. But I kept thinking "What if he goes in Malachi's room and sees the hat?!" So I stopped reading and just watched him look through the mail while Malachi bellowed for us to go keep reading lol. Totally normal...right?
Eventually I got Ryan to our room, made sure he was in the shot for the ipad camera, and Malachi and I pulled off the best surprise (yet!). You'll have to watch the video to see his reaction. Words can't describe how perfect it was <3
I'm not a huge Disney fan, but it was a pretty fantastic time to find out. Thanks to Robby for being up to helping me out! And for keeping the secret with me, even at dinner when everyone was talking about me needing to get pregnant soon lol. :)
